Keep reading to discover how this beneficial treatment option can safeguard your child\u2019s smile as they grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Silver Diamine Fluoride?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid substance that is applied to teeth to minimize the potential of dental caries (cavities) and\/or keep existing decay from spreading and worsening over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The combination of silver, water, fluoride, and ammonia is FDA-approved in the United States and is designed to kill bacteria and promote remineralization of the enamel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Silver Diamine Fluoride: What the Research Says<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A study published in 2023 found that among 3,000 school-aged children, an estimated 80% of cavities were prevented and 50% of cavities were kept from spreading with the help of silver diamine fluoride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at New York University conducted the study and discovered that when SDF was applied to the surfaces of teeth, it was just as effective as dental sealants \u2013 another preventive solution offered by dentists to reduce the risk of cavities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is Silver Diamine Fluoride Applied?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When a dentist recommends silver diamine fluoride, it\u2019s usually because a child is considered high-risk for cavities or already has one or more existing areas of decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applying the liquid substance is painless and quick, requiring no anesthesia. The dentist will use a small brush to paint the SDF onto a child\u2019s teeth. It can take up to one week, but the areas of decay will turn black. This type of staining is permanent; however, if placed onto a primary tooth, the discoloration will not transfer to the incoming permanent one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A white filling can be applied to cover stained areas for patients with permanent teeth who receive SDF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children who are not comfortable with the idea of receiving a dental filling can be ideal candidates for silver diamine fluoride.
